Hi Da-Tren and Mitesh,

Thank you again for volunteering to be a part of the ERC SLC.  One major component of being a Secretary in the SLC will be the Student Association Newsletter.  Please find below an example from another ERC.

I’m thinking we should try to publish one maybe every 2 months, with the first to come out by the end of October (?).

I’ll also pass along an email from Dr. Witte, which could be used in the first Newsletter.

The format is really up to us, so feel free to be creative.  Let me know what ideas you may have.  (I’ll post this as a topic in the Forum on RMBSA.org to facilitate discussion.)

Thanks,

Matt

Another good source for ideas may be the BMES Bulletin found here:

http://www.bmes.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=83503&orgId=bes

This would probably be a pdf file that we could send to everyone and post it on the web.

Another option could be to just have an E-Newsletter, like the BioE department at Pitt has:

http://www.engr.pitt.edu/bioengineering/main/news/spring-2009/index.html

Either way, we should think of some elements that should be in each Newsletter.

I would prefer using MS Publisher and converting it to a pdf and putting it on the site and in an ERC-wide email.

Possible sections:

  • message from Center Director Dr. Sankar or Exec. Director Dr. Borovetz, SLC presidents...
  • for the first newsletter - an overview of the ERC and its vision
  • update from each ES, what direction they are going in
  • research profile on a few professors, students and their role in the ERC
  • notable achievements of group members
  • review of the Student-Faculty Day - names of presentations and presenters, what happened in ES meetings, SLC meeting, photos from bowling, etc
  • summer events - outreach, Pitt students in Germany
  • upcoming events - ERC meeting at BMES or teleconference, webcast seminar
other suggestions?

MS Publisher is fine with me.  It's pretty easy to use, so it won't be hard for people to keep the same format in the future.

I think the format sounds good.  I'm wondering if we should shoot for 2 letter size pages (i.e. one page front and back) or 4 pages (i.e. one 17x11 page folded, to give 4 pages).  I guess it depends how much material we have.

Maybe a good first step would be to layout the potential sections and see how much space it takes up.  Once we agree on the format, then we can divide the work to fill in the material.

Hi guys,

Any update on this?  Maybe we should have a rough layout of this done by the end of this month, if we hope to publish it by the end of October.
